Why Podcast?

Joel

Have seen an increase in traffic, interest, and even some revenue from podcasting.

Think about how much a radio ad might cost you.
Guesting on another show is CHEAP – just your time.
Lots of overlap in podcast audiences. It can be like a mini focus group.

Content: The Idea

What do you talk about?

RE: DDP. We had conversations about this (dating) all the time, why not podcast them?

Talk about what you’re passionate / knowledgeable about already.
It should come naturally!

Who will care?

You’re “broadcasting” to a potentially huge audience, there is someone out there who is interested.

Things to consider

What role do you want to play on a podcast?
Do you prefer editing content over the sound of your own voice?

Find a co-host who likes to chat!

Are you comfortable submitting, creating, talking about content?
Are you ready to build a community to submit content for you to talk about?
Do you need to have things all planned out or would you be happy to record on the fly and see what happens?

Get a decent mic!

This could be anything from a $20 to a $150 professional consumer mic.
As long as the sound is clear and consistent.

Is it possible to borrow a mic from a friend before you invest?

Tips!

Don’t pause recording!

Just keep going and edit out bits you don’t like later – you’ll get used to the flow and make less mistakes as time goes on – this sounds way more natural than perfect delivery.

Check multiple iTunes stores, not just the Canadian store! Your listeners may be located elsewhere and their reviews fall under their store.

This fall marks my foray into bringing Starcrossed to comic and book festivals and sci-fi conventions. Forgive the last-minute nature of this post as I only just sorted out my plans for this coming weekend. Here are the details.

BookCamp Halifax

This is going to be more of a simple networking event for me. I’m going to learn and hopefully meet some new people.

Autodesk SketchBook Copic Edition (No Comments)

Earlier this week, Autodesk released an update to SketchBook Pro 2011 revealing a robust set of new features modeled after Copic Markers. (Press release on the Autodesk News Blog.) The full version of SketchBook Pro 2011 is priced at $59.00 (USD) and $65.00 (CAD) – Don’t get me started! – However, Autodesk has also released a special, limited edition of the Express version of their drawing software for free.

I use SketchBook Express on my Mac for really loose ideas. My digital work on Starcrossed is all post-ink-touch up so I don’t really have a need for the full version. I had a full Windows version of SketchBook Pro but when I switched to a Mac two years ago the license didn’t transfer and by that time the price of SketchBook Pro had gone up to $80.00 (CAD).

I have only just downloaded SketchBook Copic Ecition this morning, but I will be sure to post some thoughts and maybe some images after I have some time to mess around with it.

You might be asking yourself, “I know Joel draws a comic strip, but what comic strips does he read?” The answer is in the recently updated comic links in the right sidebar. I have a folder in my Chrome browser bar full of comics that I read every day. (Sheldon by Dave Kellett)

No RSS feed? Nope. I prefer to go to the artists website and generate traffic for their ad revenue. Artists usually put a lot of effort into making their sites home for their work. I prefer to observe cartoons in their natural habitat. (Bug by Adam Huber)
